Growing up in an old farmhouse in Vermont, I remember coming home from school and the smell of my mother’s baking hit me before I even walked in the door. The rich chocolatey smell made our little feet run faster up the dirt road. What could be happier than a child coming home to rows and rows of pillowy soft chocolate cookies stuffed with marshmallowy goodness? This was my first introduction to whoopie pies and I remember searching my mother’s recipe cards over the years to ask her to make them again and again.
Whoopie pies are as quintessentially New England as maple shacks and nor’easters. When I moved out west for college, I brought my baking traditions with me, and was surprised that my roommates and neighbors had never heard of these tasty treats. It was then I decided we needed to share these with others, and the idea of a business took form in my mind. So along with my husband Rod, who oversees the business and marketing portion of things, we are beginning here, in good old New Hampshire.
We are raising a family of young children and we look at this opportunity as one to help them learn about their own roots and a little about running a business. Our company specializes in making hand pies and whoopie pies in traditional New England flavors. We emphasize high quality flavors and ingredients sourced locally like eggs from our own chickens, rhubarb from our backyard and apples and blueberries from local farms. From spring’s strawberry rhubarb pies to autumn’s pumpkin whoopie pies we will be serving up nostalgia to old Yankees and a slice of local culture to newcomers.
